Why it matters: the roof is the one part of the house you cannot fix cheaply later. Choose the wrong profile for the pitch and it leaks in the first storm; choose the wrong thickness for the span or wind region and it drums, dents and fails inspection; order stock lengths and you pay for offcuts and joins. Which COLORBOND® roofing profile should you choose?

• Standard home, shed, garage or carport: Corrugated .42 BMT. The default choice for most jobs.
• High-wind area, long spans or extra durability: step up to .48 BMT (Corrugated or TRIMDEK®).
• Modern look, low roof pitch or wider rafter spacing: TRIMDEK®. Its square rib spans further and goes to a lower pitch than corrugated.
• Premium or architectural roof with no visible screws: KLIP-LOK® 700 (concealed fixing).
• Wall cladding, fences and feature walls: Mini Orb, Spandek or the Matt range; Enseam and Dominion for standing seam and interlocking cladding.
• Still unsure? Corrugated .42 is the safe, popular default.

.42 vs .48 BMT: what the thickness means

BMT stands for Base Metal Thickness: the thickness of the steel before the protective and paint coatings are added. It is the standard way roofing steel is specified in Australia. Thicker steel is stronger and more rigid, but heavier and dearer.

If your roof is a standard residential build, .42 BMT is almost always correct.

Why COLORBOND® steel for the roof

• Weight. A COLORBOND® steel roof weighs a fraction of concrete or terracotta tiles, so it puts far less load on the frame. That is why most tile-to-steel re-roofs need no structural change and why sheds and carports are built in steel.
• Heat. Every colour carries Thermatech® solar reflectance technology in the paint, and light colours such as Surfmist® reflect more of the sun's heat than dark ones. Pair a light roof with a roof blanket and the roof space runs noticeably cooler.
• Pitch. COLORBOND® profiles cover low-pitch and steep roofs; the minimum pitch depends on the profile, and each product page states it. TRIMDEK® and KLIP-LOK® go lower than corrugated.
• Fire. Steel is non-combustible, which is why COLORBOND® roofing is common in bushfire-prone areas. A roof's Bushfire Attack Level rating covers the whole system, sarking, fixings and gaps included, so your certifier confirms the detail for your BAL.
• Durability. A multi-layer coating system over a ZINCALUME® base, backed by BlueScope's warranty, with routine maintenance limited to hosing off debris, keeping the roof clear of lead and copper run-off, and checking fasteners. The steel is 100% recyclable at end of life.

Every profile is available in the 21-colour COLORBOND® range, from Surfmist® and Shale Grey® through Woodland Grey® and Monument® to Pale Eucalypt® and Manor Red®. The colours are engineered to hold their appearance in Australian sun and weather, and gutter, fascia, flashings and downpipes come in the same colours so the whole roofline matches.

Price per lineal metre depends on the profile, the steel thickness (.42 or .48 BMT) and your state, and you see live pricing as you configure the order on each profile's page.

Ordering: choose your profile, enter your sheet lengths and quantities, pick your colour, and check out online. Add flashings, ridge capping, screws, gutter and insulation to the same cart.

Delivery: made to order, dispatched within 3 to 6 business days, delivered to site. Roofing sheets and other long goods carry a state-based delivery fee shown at checkout; small items post Australia-wide.

Is this genuine COLORBOND® steel?
Yes. All sheets are rolled from genuine BlueScope COLORBOND® steel, made in Australia since 1966 and using Activate® technology in the metallic coating since 2013.

What lengths can I order?
Sheets are custom cut to the lengths you specify, so you can match your roof's run rather than trimming standard sheets on site.

What's the difference between .42 and .48 BMT?
.42 is the residential standard; .48 is heavier duty for long spans, high wind or commercial use. See the thickness section above.

Do you deliver to my area?
We deliver COLORBOND® roofing across VIC, NSW, ACT, QLD and TAS, including the major metros and most regional and rural areas. Enter your postcode on the product page to confirm.

How long does delivery take?
Dispatched within 3 to 6 business days; metro deliveries usually arrive a few days after dispatch, regional a little longer.

How much does a COLORBOND® roof cost?
The sheets on this page run from about $18.80 per lineal metre depending on profile and thickness, GST included, Victorian pricing; select your state for local prices. A roof also needs flashings, ridge capping, screws and usually gutter. The installed price is your roofer's quote: labour, removal of the old roof, battens, insulation and access are the larger part of the total. How long does a COLORBOND® roof last?
BlueScope warrants COLORBOND® steel roofing against perforation by corrosion for up to 30 years depending on the site's distance from the coast and industrial fallout, and the paint finish for a further period. A correctly installed COLORBOND® roof in a suburban environment is expected to outlast the house's first owner. The warranty is BlueScope's, registered after installation, and depends on installation to BlueScope's guidelines: compatible fasteners, no lead or copper contact, swarf swept off the day it is cut.

Do you need insulation under a COLORBOND® roof?
Almost always. Metal roof sheets transmit heat and rain noise and sweat on cold mornings, and the fix for all three is a foil-faced glasswool blanket laid over the battens before the sheets go on. It is far cheaper to fit on the day of the roof than to add later. See the 55mm roof insulation blanket and the full insulation range. The NCC sets minimum insulation and condensation requirements for new roofs; your builder or certifier confirms the level for your climate zone.

Can COLORBOND® steel be used for wall cladding too?
Yes. Several profiles double as wall cladding. Mini Orb, Spandek and the Matt range are popular for feature walls and facades; Enseam and Dominion are cladding-only profiles.
